Presidentย Donald Trumpย has officially addressed the speculation surrounding a potential third run for the White House. In a recent interview withย CNBCย on August 6, Trump stated he willย โprobably notโย run for president again after his current term, despite past suggestions and public pressure to explore legal loopholes that could allow him to return in 2028.
โNo, probably not, probably not,โ Trump told CNBC. โI have the best poll numbers Iโve ever had.โ
The 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution currently prohibits any individual from being elected president more than twice. Trump, who served from 2017 to 2021 and is now serving a second term after winning the 2024 election, would be constitutionally barred from seeking a third.
Speculation Over a Third Term
Despite constitutional limits, Trump has previously hinted at the possibility of seeking another term by referencing supposedย โloopholesโย and citingย overwhelming supportย from his political base.
โI have never had requests so strong as that,โ Trump told MSNBC earlier this year. โBut itโs something, to the best of my knowledge, youโre not allowed to do.โ
The topic was further fueled whenย U.S. Rep. Andy Oglesย proposed an amendment change that would allow a person to be electedย up to three timesโan attempt to reset the standard in favor of long-serving presidents like Trump.
However, Trump appeared to put these rumors to rest in his CNBC appearance, emphasizing that his focus is on maximizing the next four years and then handing off the reins to a trusted Republican successor.
Trumpโs Vision for the Future
In discussing his legacy, Trump highlighted his achievements related to trade and tariffs, crediting them for his continued popularity.
โPeople love the tariffs, and they love the trade deals,โ Trump said. โThey love that foreign countries arenโt ripping us off. For years, they ripped us โ friends and foes alike. The friends were worse.โ
When asked about a potentialย successor, Trump pointed toย Vice President JD Vanceย as a strong contender, suggesting that Vance could be the future of the Republican Party.
โIn all fairness, heโs the vice president,โ Trump said. โAnd he would probably be favored at this point.โ
What This Means for 2028
While some Trump supporters may still hope for a legal path toward a third term, Trumpโs comments make it clear that he doesย not plan to run again in 2028, barring major constitutional changes.
Instead, Trump appears focused onย cementing his second term, shaping the GOPโs future leadership, and leaving office with a lasting legacy. By endorsing someone like JD Vance, Trump is already laying the groundwork for the partyโs direction post-2028.
Although there has been considerable speculation and discussion about Donald Trump potentially running for aย third presidential term, his latest comments suggest heโs ready to step aside after his current presidency. His endorsement of JD Vance and confidence in Republican leadership signal a desire to pass the torchโwhile still influencing the party from behind the scenes.
