Cruise Passenger Recalls Terrifying Tsunami Scare in Hawaii
A British womanโs dream cruise turned into a nightmare after emergency tsunami alerts blared across Hawaii, forcing her and others to run for safety.
A Relaxing Vacation Turns Frightening
Rachel Burrows, visiting Hawaiiโs Big Island onย July 29, was mid-tour when disaster struck. Suddenly, her phone lit up with an urgent alert. A powerfulย 8.8 magnitude earthquakeย had just rocked Russiaโs Kamchatka Peninsulaโtriggering a tsunami warning for the Pacific region, including Hawaii.
โWe were heading back to the ship when we got the alerts,โ Burrows told theย BBC. โThe first one said, โTsunami โ youโre in immediate danger. Move to higher ground.โโ
Chaos Unfolds on the Ground
Despite the local tour guide brushing off the alert as routine, things escalated quickly. The tour group had planned a stop at a local chocolate factory, but traffic ground to a halt.
โThatโs when we knew something was wrong,โ Burrows said. โPeople had already begun to evacuate.โ
As they arrived at the factory, the owner urgently turned them away. โHe said, โYou need to go. Itโs closing. Go now.โโ
Sirens, Panic, and a Race to Safety
Sirens wailed across the area as Burrows and fellow tourists raced back to the cruise ship. โIt got really scary,โ she said. โEveryone was running, trying to get back on board.โ
They barely made it. As one of the last groups allowed to board, Burrows watched others being left behindโtold to seek higher ground instead. โThey closed the ship off,โ she recalled. โWe had to head out to sea.โ
Tsunami Downgradedโbut Danger Remained
By the early hours ofย July 30, officialsย downgraded the tsunami warning to an advisory. Theย Oahu Department of Emergency Servicesย announced that evacuations were canceled and residents could return home. Still, they warned the public toย stay away from beaches and shorelines.
โStrong currents and beach hazards may still occur,โ officials cautioned. โShips should head to deeper water if safe.โ
Meanwhile, theย U.S. National Tsunami Warning Centerย confirmed that the west coastโincludingย California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaskaโwas not at risk.
A Global Shockwave
The earthquake, one of the strongest ever recorded, triggered tsunami alerts acrossย Japan,ย Russia,ย Canada, and theย U.S.ย The situation sent shockwavesโboth literal and emotionalโacross the Pacific.
