Crime Falls, Immigration Arrests Surge After Federal Takeover in D.C.m
Washington, D.C. has seenย crime drop but immigration arrests soarย afterย President Trumpโs administration took controlย of local law enforcement onย August 12, 2025.
Federal agents and National Guard troops were deployed following what officials called a โcollapse in public safety.โ
According toย MPD data, property crime fell byย 19%ย and violent crime byย 17%, whileย robberies and vehicle break-insย declined more thanย 40%.
However,ย assaults with weaponsย roseย 14%, andย burglariesย increasedย 6%.
The biggest change came inย immigration enforcement:ย about 300 undocumented individualsย were detained in a week โย ten times the usual rate.
Federal agents are nowย accompanying D.C. policeย on patrols.
White House spokespersonย Abigail Jacksonย said,
โThese results are life-changing for the families who are no longer facing violence, theft, or worse.โ
Mayorย Muriel Bowserย condemned the move as anย attack on D.C.โs sanctuary policies, while legal battles continue over the presidentโs authority to override local control.
