A small passenger plane crashed into the sea shortly after takeoff from Roatán Island,

Honduras, killing multiple people and prompting a large emergency response.

The aircraft went down Monday just moments after liftoff, according to witnesses

who said it appeared to struggle before plunging near the shoreline.

Honduras’ transport ministry said the Lanhsa Airlines flight was carrying 14

passengers and three crew members on a short trip to La Ceiba on the mainland.

Authorities confirmed several fatalities, noting that those on board included two children, a French citizen, and a U.S. national.

Among the victims was Aurelio Martínez, an internationally recognized Garifuna musician known for sharing his culture’s music with the world.

His death has drawn widespread tributes.

Rescue and recovery operations remain underway as investigators review weather conditions, aircraft maintenance, and pilot communications.

Honduran aviation officials have promised a full investigation while the government provides support to grieving families nationwide.
