As the federal government shutdown enters another tense chapter, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt found themselves locked in a war of words Friday that quickly escalated from political disagreement to personal attacks.
Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, Jeffries launched an unusually harsh critique of Leavitt, accusing her of spreading misinformation and fueling division during a time when millions of Americans are facing the consequences of a frozen federal government.
“You’ve got Karoline Leavitt, who’s sick. She’s out of control,” Jeffries said, according to Fox News. “And I’m not sure whether she’s just demented, ignorant, a stone-cold liar, or all of the above.”
His comments came in response to Leavitt’s earlier remarks, in which she accused the Democratic Party of being “a coalition of terrorists, violent criminals, and undocumented immigrants.”

“The notion that an official White House spokesperson would say that the Democratic Party consists of terrorists, violent criminals, and undocumented immigrants makes no sense,” Jeffries said. “This is what the American people are getting from the Trump administration in the middle of a shutdown.”
The lawmaker went on to accuse the administration of using “outrage politics” to distract from its own failures to reach a deal with congressional leaders that would restore government operations.
