Hero deputy, father of three, remembered after fatal Kansas shootout

More than two months after a tragic shootout in small-town Kansas, the community of Phillipsburg is still mourning the loss ofย Deputy Brandon Gaede, a young father and devoted officer remembered for his courage until his final breath.

A Deadly Night in Phillipsburg

On the night ofย June 27, 2025, Gaede responded to reports of illegal fireworks in Phillipsburg, a farming town of just 2,300. While attempting to handcuffย 27-year-old Kolton Griffithย outside a home at 899 1st Street, a struggle broke out.

Griffith pulled a concealed handgun and opened fire, striking Gaede. Despite his injuries, the 30-year-old deputyย returned fire, hitting Griffith multiple times.ย Griffith died at the scene. Gaede was rushed to the hospital but died later that night at 10:24 p.m.

From Small-Town Roots to Sheriffโ€™s Star

Gaedeโ€™s journey into law enforcement began after graduating fromย Colby High School in 2013ย and earning his associateโ€™s degree from Colby Community College in 2015. He started as a jailer in Thomas County before joining the Phillips County Sheriffโ€™s Office in 2017.

In July 2024, he was promoted to undersheriff, recognition of his leadership and dedication, though he was not currently serving as undersheriff at the time of his death.

A Family Left Behind

The tragedy left behind Gaedeโ€™s wife and their three young children, who remain at the heart of the communityโ€™s outpouring of support. In the days after the shooting,ย Farmers State Bank in Phillipsburgย opened a donation account to assist the family โ€” an effort that is still active as neighbors continue to rally around them.

โ€œBrandon gave everything for his community,โ€ย one resident wrote on Facebook.ย โ€œWe will never forget his sacrifice.โ€

A Lasting Legacy

For Phillipsburg, the pain is still fresh. The image of a deputy wounded in the line of duty, yet fighting back to protect others until his final breath, has become a lasting symbol of bravery.

โ€œDeputy Gaede died a hero,โ€ย one neighbor said.ย โ€œAnd two months later, heโ€™s still protecting this town in the way we remember him.โ€
