Fallen Officers in Tremonton, Utah, Honored as Community Mourns

Two beloved police officers were shot and killed after responding to a call that began with a series of mysterious 911 hangups. What unfolded next shocked the quiet town of Tremonton, Utah and left a community forever changed.

A Routine Call Turns Deadly

Sergeant Lee Sorensen, 56, andย Officer Eric Estrada, 31, were fatally shot on Sunday, August 17, after arriving at a residence where police had receivedย โ€œmultiple 911 hangup calls.โ€ย Authorities said one officer was shot after speaking with a resident about a possibleย domestic disturbance, and the second was fired upon shortly after when he arrived at the scene.

The suspectโ€”identified by local outlets asย Ryan Michael Bate, 32โ€”allegedly came out of the home andย opened fire without warning, striking and killing both officers in a matter of moments.

A third responder,ย Deputy Mike Allredย from the Box Elder County Sheriffโ€™s Office, was also injured along with his K9 after the suspect f*red multiple rounds into his patrol vehicle. Both are recovering and listed inย fair condition.

โ€œMore People Would Have Died That Nightโ€

โ€œWe are living every copโ€™s worst nightmare, make no mistake on that,โ€ย said Dustin Cordova, chief of the Tremonton-Garland Police Department. But in the aftermath of unimaginable loss, he emphasized theย heroismย of Sorensen and Estrada.

โ€œKnowing what happened, knowing the information, I can say unequivocally that Eric and Lee are heroes. โ€ฆ I truly believe from the bottom of my heart more people would have died that night had they not intervened,โ€ย Cordova said.

Box Elderโ€™s Chief Deputy Cade Palmer echoed those words, praisingย Deputy Allredโ€™s quick thinkingย for preventing additional casualties by redirecting other officers away from the line of fire.

โ€œThere Is No Higher Honor Than Human Serviceโ€

Both fallen officers were deeply embedded in theย Tremonton-Garland community. Sgt. Sorensenโ€™s niece, Madison Peterson, recalled his favorite quote:

โ€œThere is no higher honor than human serviceโ€ฆ To work for the common good is the greatest deed.โ€

Estradaโ€™s wife, Brittney Estrada, released a brief but poignant statement:

โ€œEverything feels surreal at the moment, but we are so proud of Eric and Lee for their sacrifice. I know heโ€™s in heaven smiling down.โ€

Blue Ribbons, Flags, and a Town in Mourning

As flags were lowered andย blue ribbonsย lined the trees of Tremonton, thousands across Utah came together in tribute. Vigils were held, processions formed, and signs readingย โ€œNever forget Sgt. Sorensen & Ofc. Estradaโ€ย adorned the police department lawn.

Tremonton Mayor Lyle Holmgren spoke through tears at a press conference:

โ€œThese officers served our community with courage, dedication, and their sacrifice will never be forgotten.โ€

The suspect,ย Ryan Michael Bate, was taken into custody after bystanders convinced him to surrender his weapon; additional officers then detained him. He has been charged withย capital aggravated murder, first-degree felony attempted a**ravated murder, and misdemeanor assault, according to booking records reported by local outlets.

According to court records, Bate allegedlyย assaulted his wifeย before police arrived, sl**ming her head into a doorframe.
