Congress Preparing To Debate Crime Bill

Lawmakers are bracing for a new crime package as President Donald Trump pledges to make Washington,

D.C. a model of safety. “We think the Democrats will not do anything to stop crime,

but we think the Republicans will do it almost unanimously,”

Trump said, promising a bill that “will pertain initially to D.C.”

2. White House and DOJ Coordination

Attorney General Pam Bondi said the Justice Department would work with local and

federal law enforcement “to address the scourge of violent crime in Washington, D.C.”

Trump also mentioned seeking “a relatively small amount of money” to fix streets and improve the city’s appearance.

Sen. Lindsey Graham confirmed the White House is drafting the proposal for him and

Sen. Katie Britt to review, noting, “Every American should be behind this effort to make Washington D.C. clean and safe.”

4. Political and Timing Hurdles

Congress returns after Labor Day facing tight deadlines and must decide whether to extend Trump’s temporary control over the D.C.

police—an action that would require 60 Senate votes and faces Democratic resistance.
