Ukrainian Refugee Fatally Stabbed in Charlotte
Iryna Zarutska, 23, fled war-torn Ukraine for safety in North Carolinaโonly
to be fatally stabbed on a Charlotte train on August 22.
Authorities described it as an โunprovoked assault.โ
The suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., claimed โmaterialsโ inside his body made him lash out.
Zarutska had texted her boyfriend that she โwould be home soon.โ
Family Devastated
Her family said,ย โIryna came here to find peace and safety, and instead her life was stolen from her in the most horrific way.โ
She worked at a pizzeria while studying English.
Public and Political Outrage
Brown had 14 prior arrests. Judge Teresa Stokes released him earlier on a โwritten promise.โ
โNorth Carolinaโs justice system failed Iryna Zarutska,โย said House Speaker Tim Moore, calling the judge โunfit.โ
Mental Health Concerns
Brownโs sister called him โa paranoid schizophrenic.โ She recalled him saying,ย โThe government is trafficking yโall to get to me.โ
