Progressive Democrats are pushing to impeach former President Donald Trump after he launched a surprise military strike on Iranian nuclear sites. But internal party resistance is blocking the effort.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) condemned the move as unconstitutional, stating, “The President’s catastrophic decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers.” Her comments sparked renewed calls for a third impeachment.
However, key Democrats like Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) strongly opposed the idea. “He [Trump] shouldn’t be impeached,” Fetterman said in a Fox News interview. “That isn’t going anywhere, as we all know.” He warned against using impeachment as a political tool, saying, “Every time someone disagrees with a policy decision, it shouldn’t be a reflexive reaction.”
Strike Sparks Broader Debate
Trump’s strike targeted Iranian nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan using bunker-busting bombs. He addressed the nation afterward, assuring Americans, “Iran and we are not at war. The purpose of this targeted attack was to neutralize a growing and immediate nuclear threat.”
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Trump’s failure to get congressional approval but stopped short of supporting impeachment. “Donald Trump bears complete and total responsibility for any adverse consequences,” he said.
