The Shocking Arrival

This evening, I stepped into the yard and froze. My four-year-old daughter stood at the doorstep, her little pink backpack on, a rolling suitcase beside herโ€”the one we usually took to the seaside.

Her eyes were shiny and red. She had clearly been crying.

โ€œSweetheart, what happened?โ€ I crouched down. โ€œWhy are you standing here? And why the suitcase?โ€

She took a deep breath, her small chest rising as if she were about to deliver a very serious announcement.

โ€œDaddyโ€ฆโ€ she said, her voice trembling. โ€œIโ€™m leaving this house.โ€

My Heart Skipped a Beat

I felt my stomach drop. โ€œYouโ€ฆ what? Where are you going? Why? Did something happen?โ€

She frowned, her lip trembling. โ€œI canโ€™t live here anymore!โ€ Her tone was so dramatic, I almost thought she had rehearsed it.

Immediately, worst-case scenarios ran through my mind. Had someone hurt her? Had something happened at kindergarten?

โ€œExplain properlyโ€ฆ please,โ€ I said, bracing myself.

And then came the words that completely shocked me.

The Reason Left Me Laughing

โ€œI canโ€™t live with your wife anymore,โ€ she declared.

I blinked, stunned. โ€œYou meanโ€ฆ your mother?โ€

โ€œYes!โ€ she said indignantly. โ€œI donโ€™t love her anymore!โ€

โ€œOkayโ€ฆ and what did Mom do?โ€ I asked.

She threw her hands up. โ€œSheโ€™sโ€ฆ a monster! A real monster! She wonโ€™t let me watch TV, she wonโ€™t let me eat chocolate, and she keeps making me clean my room!โ€

I turned away, struggling not to laugh.

Planning Her Escape

โ€œSoโ€ฆ where are you going to live then?โ€ I asked, keeping my voice calm.

โ€œFar away from your wife!โ€ she said proudly.

โ€œAnd more specifically?โ€

โ€œAt Grandmaโ€™s!โ€ she announced like a champion. โ€œGrandma lets me watch cartoons and always gives me chocolate!โ€

At that point, I couldnโ€™t hold it in any longer. I burst out laughing. She stood there, so serious she looked forty, not four.

Back Inside, Safe and Loved

I hugged her tightly and kissed the top of her head.

โ€œMy little princessโ€ฆ come on, letโ€™s go back inside. Iโ€™ll talk to that monster.โ€

She looked up at me, her eyes wide. โ€œDaddyโ€ฆ will you really talk to her?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ I said with a smile. โ€œBut first, we unpack this suitcase, alright?โ€

She nodded. With the expression of a tiny champion, she rolled her suitcase back into the house.
