SPAM has been a popular canned meat since 1937, but its nutrition profile raises concerns for older adults.

A 2-ounce serving has about 180 calories, 7g of protein, 16g of fat, and roughly 790mg of sodium.

While it provides protein, the sodium and saturated fat are the main issues for seniors.

Aging bodies are more sensitive to salt, and high sodium can raise blood pressure and strain the heart and kidneys.

The American Heart Association recommends “1,500–2,300mg per day,” and one serving of SPAM takes up a large portion of that limit.

Its saturated fat may also raise LDL cholesterol, increasing heart disease and stroke risk.

As a processed meat, SPAM is also linked to higher cancer risk and lacks nutrients seniors need.

It’s not forbidden, but moderation matters. Lower-sodium versions, smaller portions, and alternatives like canned tuna, chicken breast, or legumes are healthier options.
