School Bus Crash on Highway 401 Leaves Driver Dead, Four Students Injured

A school bus driver died and four students were hospitalized with

minor injuries after a crash Sunday morning on Highway 401 in London, Ont., police said.

Ontario Provincial Police reported the bus, carrying 42 Grade 9 students from

Kitchener Waterloo Collegiate Institute, veered off the westbound lanes around 9:40 a.m. and tipped into a ditch.

“Four of [the passengers] were transported to the hospital with minor injuries,” said OPP Const.

Steven Duguay. The 52-year-old driver, from the Waterloo region, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Student Charlotte Weldon, 13, recalled, “Something hit it. The whole bus just kept going right, and then it ended up sideways in a ditch.”

Police said it’s too early to confirm the cause, noting possibilities include a “medical or mechanical” issue.

The Waterloo Region District School Board said supports are being provided to students and families.
