The round white sign with a black diagonal stripe is common across Britain, yet many seem confused.

Reddit users joked about its meaning, suggesting

“National drifting zone,” “minimum speed – 80,”

or even “go as fast as you want and overtake on a bend if you feel like it.”

What It Really Means

The RAC explains: “A white circular sign with a single black diagonal stripe…

tells you that the national speed limit applies.” It overrides previous speed restrictions.

National Speed Limits

For cars, the limits are 30 mph in built-up areas, 60 mph on single carriageways, and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Vans and vehicles towing trailers face lower limits. The RAC adds: always drive according to conditions, not just the maximum speed.
