Olympic legend Mary Lou Retton, a beloved West Virginia native, is in intensive care battling pneumonia.
Her daughter, McKenna Kelley, revealed that Retton has been unable to breathe on her own for more than a week.
In an Instagram story, Kelley shared, “Please consider helping our family out,
and most importantly, please continue to pray.”She also disclosed that Retton does not have health insurance.
Fundraising Efforts
To support her mother, Kelley launched a Spotfund campaign, asking fans for donations and prayers.
Out of respect for Retton’s privacy, she has kept details limited but emphasized the seriousness of her condition.
A Historic Career
Retton’s journey began in Fairmont, West Virginia, and she made history at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Weeks after knee surgery, she scored two perfect 10s in floor and vault, becoming the first American to win the all-around gold medal in gymnastics. She also earned two silver and two bronze medals, making her the most decorated gymnast of those games.

Beyond her Olympic achievements, Retton appeared in television and films, served on the
President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under President George W. Bush, and became a global ambassador for gymnastics.
