Ukrainian Refugee Fatally Stabbed in Charlotte

Iryna Zarutska, 23, fled war-torn Ukraine for safety in North Carolina—only

to be fatally stabbed on a Charlotte train on August 22.

Authorities described it as an “unprovoked assault.”

The suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., claimed “materials” inside his body made him lash out.

Zarutska had texted her boyfriend that she “would be home soon.”

Family Devastated

Her family said, “Iryna came here to find peace and safety, and instead her life was stolen from her in the most horrific way.”

She worked at a pizzeria while studying English.

Public and Political Outrage

Brown had 14 prior arrests. Judge Teresa Stokes released him earlier on a “written promise.”

“North Carolina’s justice system failed Iryna Zarutska,” said House Speaker Tim Moore, calling the judge “unfit.”

Mental Health Concerns

Brown’s sister called him “a paranoid schizophrenic.” She recalled him saying, “The government is trafficking y’all to get to me.”
