While digging in the forest, I encountered a nest and my friends immediately advised me to run. This was no ordinary find—it was the home of Xylaria nigripes, also known locally as “O Linh ginseng.” Despite its unappealing appearance, this medicinal fungus has significant health benefits. It is used to treat insomnia, reduce blood pressure, stop bleeding, and alleviate burns. Additionally, it is believed to improve memory, protect the brain, and support kidney function. It is especially valuable for post-surgery recovery, after childbirth, or during breastfeeding.

Scientifically, Xylaria nigripes belongs to the Xylariaceae family and has demonstrated a range of bioactivities. These include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective effects, as well as potential anti-tumor and anti-depressant properties. Research suggests that its active compounds, like polysaccharides, adenosine, and triterpenoids, contribute to these therapeutic effects. Studies on the fungus’s protective effects against oxidative stress have shown promising results, particularly in protecting neural cells from damage caused by stressors like hydrogen peroxide.
