Trump Accuses Schiff Of Lying About Maryland
Trump Accuses Schiff of Mortgage Fraud
On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump accused Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) of mortgage fraud, claiming Schiff misrepresented a Maryland property as a second home to get better mortgage rates.
In a Truth Social post, Trump called Schiff a “scam artist” and said, “Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division have concluded that Adam Schiff has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud.”
Schiff denied the claims, calling them “baseless.”
Details of the Allegation
Trump alleged Schiff falsely claimed his Maryland home was his primary residence from 2009 to 2020, despite being a California congressman.
Trump wrote, “Adam Schiff said that his primary residence was in MARYLAND to get a cheaper mortgage and rip off America.”
He also accused Schiff of fraudulently refinancing the home multiple times. No evidence was presented, and Fannie Mae declined to comment.
Schiff Responds to Political Attack
Schiff dismissed the allegations as political retaliation. “This baseless attempt at political retribution won’t stop me from holding him accountable,” Schiff wrote on X, referring to his role in Trump’s first impeachment. A spokesperson added that lenders “were well aware of then-Representative Schiff’s Congressional service and of his intended year-round use of both homes.”
Context and Background
According to reports, Schiff labeled both his Maryland and California homes as “principal residences” on various documents from 2003 to 2020. The Constitution only requires members of Congress to be inhabitants of their state at the time of election, not throughout their terms. A Republican activist who filed an ethics complaint originally surfaced the allegations. Schiff later called the claims “without merit” in a video response.
