The Necklace That Almost Broke Me Fixed So

A Joke Disguised as a Gift

A coworker I barely liked gave me a flashy gold necklace for my birthday. I wore it everywhereโ€”until months later, I spotted the engraving:
โ€œOffice Joke.โ€

My stomach dropped. Turns out, a few coworkers had pitched in as a prank, giving it to someone they thought was โ€œtrying too hard.โ€

That someone was me. An intern, Rafi, laughed when he asked if Iโ€™d seen the backโ€”thinking I was in on it. I laughed tooโ€ฆ then cried alone in the bathroom for ten minutes.

Hiding from the Hurt

I stopped going to lunches, added fake calendar blocks, and avoided everyone.

โ€œI said I was tired, but really, I was hiding.โ€ I let their cruel joke shrink me. Even worse? I didnโ€™t even like most of them. Yet I let their opinions define me.

The Turning Point

At a meeting, Curtisโ€”the ringleaderโ€”mocked someoneโ€™s shoes. Without thinking, I snapped:
โ€œCurtis, do you ever get tired of being the punchline guy? Or is it, like, your personality now?โ€
The room froze. Then people laughedโ€”athim. That moment cracked the silence. โ€œPeople like him thrive on our silence. It isthat deep when youโ€™re the target.โ€

Reclaiming Power

I returned to myselfโ€”red lipstick, bold outfits, helping others when respected. One day, the necklace reappeared. Same chain, new engraving:
โ€œKeep Shining.โ€

No note, but I suspected Rafi. I wore it againโ€”not as a wound, but a reminder of growth. Later, Curtis apologized:
โ€œI was a jerk. I thought being funny meantโ€ฆ whatever that was. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€
I replied, โ€œI know.โ€ It wasnโ€™t forgiveness, just truth.

โ€œThe real gift wasnโ€™t the necklace; it was the mirror it held up.โ€ Now, I stand tallerโ€”and help others do the same.
