Bed Bath & Beyond Rejects California Expansion

Bed Bath & Beyond CEO Marcus Lemonis announced the company will not open stores in California, citing the stateโ€™s tough regulations and business climate.

โ€œWe will not open or operate retail stores in California,โ€ Lemonis said in a statement.

He criticized the stateโ€™s economic environment, stating,

โ€œCalifornia has created one of the most overregulated, expensive, and risky environments for businesses in America.โ€ He added, โ€œHigher taxes, higher fees, higher wagesโ€ฆ and endless regulationsโ€ฆ strangle growth.โ€

Lemonis emphasized the companyโ€™s shift to serving California customers through online channels.

โ€œInstead, we are investing in a California strategy that works: 24โ€“48-hour delivery, and in many cases, same-day service,โ€ he said.

โ€œWeโ€™re taking a stand because itโ€™s time for common sense,โ€ he concluded.

โ€œThatโ€™s why Bed Bath & Beyond will serve California customers directly through BedBathandBeyond.com, on our terms, and with their best interests at heart.โ€

Political Implications for Newsom

The announcement could pose a challenge for California Governor Gavin Newsom, seen as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate. Critics argue the business climate under his leadership is pushing companies away.

Border Patrol Presence at Newsom Event

Tensions rose last week when armed Border Patrol agents were seen outside a Newsom-hosted rally in Los Angeles. At least one person was arrested.

โ€œWeโ€™re here making Los Angeles a safer place,โ€ said Chief Gregory Bovino.
Newsomโ€™s office responded defiantly:
โ€œWE WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY WEAK LITTLE DONALD TRUMP, THE CRIMINAL PRESIDENT!โ€
