Alarming Sightings of “Zombie Squirrels” Across the U.S.
Americans are being warned to steer clear of squirrels after disturbing images surfaced of the animals with wart-like growths, oozing sores, and swollen faces.
The photos, shared widely on Reddit and Facebook, have left many alarmed. One user wrote, “Any ideas what is going on with this little fella?” after spotting a squirrel with a large mass on its face.
Squirrel Pox: Ugly but Usually Harmless
Experts have identified the condition as squirrel pox (or squirrel fibromatosis), a naturally occurring virus that’s more common than people realize.
Wildlife biologist Shevenell Webb explained, “It is naturally occurring and will run its course in time,” but warned people not to approach infected animals:
“I would not recommend trying to capture a squirrel that has the virus.”
The disease spreads through contact or mosquito bites, especially when squirrels gather at feeders. “It’s like when you get a large concentration of people…
others are going to catch it,” said Webb.
“Zombie” Hysteria Online
Social media users quickly dubbed the animals “zombie squirrels.” Some expressed shock and concern, while others added humor. One Redditor wrote, “Squirrel Pox, ladies and gentlemen. Thank God they’re only for squirrels.” Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge also noted that some similar symptoms may be caused by botfly parasites, adding, “Only skilled rehabbers or vets should attempt to extract bots.”
