Jill Biden Ends Long Teaching Career
After over 40 years in education, First Lady Jill Biden has taught her final class.
She announced the end of her teaching career during a virtual event honoring educators, marking the close of her 15 years as an English and writing professor at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA).
As the only First Lady in U.S. history to maintain a full-time job while in the White House, Biden reflected on her dedication to teaching:
“I will always love this profession, which is why I continued to teach full time while serving as your First Lady.”
She told fellow educators, “Being your First Lady has been the honor of my life. But being your colleague has been the work of my life.”
A Lasting Impact
NOVA President Anne Kress called her an “exceptional faculty member,” adding that she earned widespread respect and leaves a strong legacy in community college education.
Jill Biden began teaching in 1976, working with high school students and later as a reading specialist and instructor at a psychiatric hospital. She earned a doctorate in educational leadership and spent 15 years teaching at Delaware Technical Community College before joining NOVA in 2009.
