Pelosi Supports Gender-Affirming Care for Trans Kids
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she is “working for at the national level” to support gender-affirming care for transgender children. Speaking after a visit to the San Francisco VA Medical Center, Pelosi acknowledged opposition from Republicans but emphasized, “Outside our door, we have a trans flag,” showing solidarity.
Legal Battles Over Transgender Youth Care
More than a dozen Democratic-led states sued the Trump administration to block its efforts to halt sex change treatments for minors. The lawsuit targets President Trump and officials for trying to “impose a nationwide ban” and threatens providers with “baseless criminal charges.” Several hospitals, like Kaiser Permanente and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, paused or stopped gender transition care for children due to these actions.
State Laws and Public Opinion
While some states permit gender-affirming procedures for minors, many have laws restricting or banning them. Public opinion is divided: 56% support banning gender transition medical care for minors, and two-thirds believe athletes should compete according to their birth gender, according to Pew Research.
Political and Social Tensions
Progressives are debating how much to prioritize transgender issues amid concerns of public backlash. An attack ad contrasted Kamala Harris’s support for transgender care with Trump’s focus on “everyday Americans,” stating, “Harris is for They/Them. Trump is for you.” Even California Gov. Gavin Newsom called gender-related sports participation “deeply unfair.”
